Amsterdam Whitney Gallery, New York, 2013.

Impressionist master Claude Monet declared, "Paint what you really see, not what you think you ought to see... the object enveloped in sunlight and atmosphere, with the blue dome of Heaven reflected in the shadows." Contemporary painter David Culp arrests pastoral serenity in his beautiful Impressionist paintings, exalting the power, energy and spirituality of Modern cityscapes.

On his frequent trips to Europe, Mr. Culp rides his bicycle and photographs facinating European cityscapes to capture their insouciant charm and local color. His crations resemble the quiet, peaceful landscape paintings of Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Monet's interest lied in excavating natural beauty in everyday experience, mirroring Mr. Culp's own ideas on his artistic expression, stating, "In our hurried existance, we may be distracted by many objects that vie for our attention; the poet-painter, selecting a subject, directs us out of chaos to the supreme state of mind." A vision of a calm, desolate street on a dark winters's day delicatly fills the composition of David Culp's Acrylic and Ink canvasas. The extreme linear perspective draws viewers into depths of a quiet, anonymous city. The elongated, linear brush strokes mimic the delicate curves of the apartment-lined street. The energetic brush strokes used to render the apartment buildings add texture and depth to the simplely designed facades. Even though the brush strokes add visual dynamism to the quiet scene, the cool-colored compositions promote a tranquil mood, mimicking a feeling of serenity one would have walking through the empty streets of a Modern city. Mr. Culp's cityscapes transform Modern citys into peaceful landscapes, exposing the delicate curves, colors and the natural beauty of architecture and its industrial materials.

The award-winning artist David Culp works and resides in Los Angeles, CA. He earned a B.A. degree from Whittier college in psychology. Mr. Culp exhibits in group and solo exhibitions internationally. His artwork is treasured in many public and private collections, and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery is proud to showcase the art of this contempory master.
